The ISJO is responsible for the development and coordination of the Regional Waste Strategy 2017 to 2021. A copy of the Strategy is available here. The Strategy covers both the ISJO region and Wingecarribee Council area in the Southern Highlands under the banner of the Southern Region Waste Program.
The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA), under the Waste Less Recycle More initiative, funded the development of a Regional Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy. ISJO commissioned Jacobs to prepare the Regional Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy on behalf of participating Councils (Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven and Wingecarribee). A number of workshops were held to identify and evaluate opportunities for, and the benefits of, regional and sub regional collaboration. The Strategy was endorsed by each General Manager at the end of 2017. A copy of the Strategy was provided to the EPA in accordance with the funding agreement.
A number of operational programs across these Councils support delivery of the Strategy. These include the Regional Illegal Dumping Program, the Regional Waste Education Program, and the Regional Litter Reduction program.
